Dzifa Abequaye Gray, Dele Onabowu During the week, I met up with a very inspirational woman. She is perhaps, the most assiduous UK based African talk show host gracing our screens today. She is beautiful, elegant ,stylish and a great role model to women worldwide. She is none other than Ghanaian born presenter, model and actress, Dzifa Abequaye Gray. Dzifa’s talk show , The Titi Gray Show - focuses on youth development, women issues, relationships and entertainment. We sat down for a chat about her work and life and this is how it went. Dele: Hello Dzifa, on behalf of Nollywood Uncut, i would like to welcome you to 30 mins
Dzifa: Very Honoured to be here. Dele: I am aware that your show has been around for a year or two now, but how exactly did you get to host your own TV show?
Dzifa: My show has been around for almost 2years now. As a young girl growing up, my favourite personalities on TV were news readers and journalists. At 18, I realized that youths in Africa especially , sometimes were often deprived of the opportunity of being happy for various reasons. I was one of those children which made me promise two special people in my life that i will do all I can to make their experiences a lot better than mine. Dele: Hosting a show must mean that you have a really tight schedule. What is a week in the life of Dzifa like?
Dzifa: Firstly comes research, but also comes honouring invites, and meeting people. A girl has to keep her ear firmly to the EVENTS ground. Dele: Where did the Titi in the Titi Gray show originate from? Titi is a very common name in Nigeria. Dzifa: I hope from today i will only get few Nigerians saying Titi is a Nigerian name. My mum (Ghanaian) was called T.T by close friends and family and it always brought a smile to her face. That was one of the things i loved about her and I miss her dearly. Titi is coined from my mothers name which shows how dear she was to me. To spice it up, i decided to add two I's to it. Dele: What are the pros and cons if any, of being a TV personality? Dzifa: The show has helped me to achieve part of my dreams and knowing that it provides a source of inspiration to other women gives me tremendous pride and happiness and this is a plus. On the other hand, it comes with great pressure not to disappoint, not just on the screen but in ones private life. It has not been an easy journey but i believe as imperfect humans, we reach a point in life when we set rules for ourselves and do our possible best to abide by them and that's what I am doing right now in my life. ![]() Dele: You must have met a lot of famous personalities in your line of work. Would you like to share that with us. Dzifa: Yes, quite a few and the key is to remain focused and professional. It is quite exciting all the same to interview stars and personalities, asking probing questions and getting the first scoop on news and developments. I have also met personalities that have not been on my show, but having the privilege of sitting face to face and engaging in a conversation with them has been priceless. Dele: What do you attribute your success as a talk show host to ? Dzifa: My philosophy of life, coupled with many life experiences has shaped and guided the show. Knowing who you are, helps you to become a source of compassion for others. Understanding also that ones strength, confidence and conviction can enable others to find their own strength and truth. This means many can relate to the issues and of course the stars and celebrities. I believe in experiences Although one persons trials and experiences may seem greater than another's, they are both victims and possess the right to share their experiences with others. You never know whose life it will change. Dele: Do you have a role model? What and who is your inspiration? Dzifa: Yes i do and it is OPRAH WINFREY. IN HER OWN WORDS SHE SAID. “IT DOESN’T MATTER WHO YOU ARE, WHERE YOU COME FROM, THE ABILITY TO TRIUMPH BEGINS WITH YOU, ALWAYS. This is the girl who thought her life was nothing till she realized her dream and took that first step. Frankly speaking, there are thousands of women out there that have experiences that can change the world just like Oprah Winfrey is doing but it is taking that first step, determination and support from our own people that makes those dreams come true. Dele: Any advice to youngsters hoping to follow in your footsteps? Dzifa: Thanks, it is a privilege to be given this opportunity. Life is very beautiful and each human needs to enjoy it but do it the right way and the right time. Education is the key. Each and everyone one has great potential but only few can realise it. I grew up with a responsibility that at first thought seemed insane but tin retrospect, i scan ay it was preparing me for the journey ahead. Don’t let anyone tell you who you are, search and you will find how unique you are and make great use of it. Build up your confidence because you will need it in order to be successful. Never give up on your dreams, continue to work hard and you will have a good experience to share someday. It is our determination and our ability to live the life we are destined for that will create change in this world. They should thus all make an appointment with a glorious destiny and work towards it Dele: Dzifa, it has been a blast talking to you and I will be watching your show this Saturday Dzifa: Thanks you for having me. The Titi Gray Show airs every Saturday on Ben TV (Sky Channel 184) at 7PM.
