Except you have been living under a rock (I assume I am speaking to Nigerians) you all know that Nigerians woke up on JANUARY 2nd, (Imagine the date!) to be informed that fuel the life blood of the nation... the energy that powers not just our cars but generates electricity in in our homes and offices, has had its price increased YET AGAIN from N65 per litre to N141 a litre! An all-ready over-stretched and 0ver-stressed people trying to eke out a living in deplorable living conditions are stretched further with this announcement! Ofcourse, it is natural... tempers are flared, people are angry especially when the Executive have passed a budget running into billions of personal luxuries for the National Assembly to approve... I wont bother going into the details. So yes people are angry! Yes and rightly so! If the tables were turned the same people in power would be equally upset. And it is all so needless. This is a nation blessed with so much human and natural resources... almost every precious mineral known to man is in abundance in this country but is lying waste or mismanaged by a bunch of greedy, poverty-mentalitied (if there is such a word!) human beings! I was privy to see some figures said to be amassed by beneficiaries of the fuel subsidy and could not help but shake my head. Why must a privileged few think they must amass all, at the detriment of others? Will they be able to take all that ill-gotten wealth with them to the grave? They should ask all those Depots that have gone last year and the year before where their wicked hoarding of wealth has got them to? Why are people so greedy? God is watching and one day we shall give account for all the deeds done in the body to 'our fellow man'!
N141 per litre for a product native to our country and given to us freely by God..Is that fair? How much does it really cost to refine crude oil and use it in our own land? Why must the cost of fuel be the same as that of our counterparts in the U.S when we dont have the same infrastructures to back it up? Why don't we have electricity, forcing us to depend so much on fuel as if it is blood?
Why can't we have things working as when they should? And they want people to keep quiet and follow meekly as sheep! I'm sorry but they have murdered sleep! Why can't we just dwell peacefully in our environment as other human beings? Why does the Government take delight in making life hard for its citizens? Why are Nigerian leaders so insensitive? How do they sleep at night knowing they short-changed their citizens daily? If you have the opportunity to travel abroad and come back home, you will feel so upset with this country's leaders because you will see how other countries take care of their own citizens. That's why the typical Nigerian is a rugged, resourceful, opportunist that knows how to look out for himself when the chips are down because they Government taught him so. We are our own social security.... you look out for yourself! Period! This is not ment to be some analytical treatise on the ' rudiments of the Fuel Subsidy' or whatever but just an earnest attempt to make sense of this debacle the Government has put the country in.
At the end of the day, we must all give account of of how our life was spent and how we used opportunities given us to make our fellow man a happier person. May we be able to say we did ggod things and were fair in our decisions. Power is transient. Kingdoms rise and fall. The only thing constant in life is change. May God bless the the Federal Republic of Nigeria (and rid it of its bloodsuckers!)
